The Writer's Reverie started the way most good craft essays do — out of a stubborn refusal to repeat the same tired writing advice one more time.
What this place is
The Writer's Reverie is a small, independent craft journal built around one stubborn idea: good fiction is made by real decisions on the page, not by vibes or inspiration or the tenth repetition of "show, don't tell." Every essay here is a close read of how published fiction actually works — the specific lines where a scene turns, the quiet decisions underneath the prose, the techniques you can borrow without copying the writer.
You won't find AI-generated writing-advice slop, listicles cribbed from other blogs, or hedged platitudes about "finding your voice." What you will find:
- Essays grounded in real books — craft points traced to specific paragraphs in specific novels, not abstract pep talks
- Honest writing about writing — if a technique is hard, I'll say so. If advice is widely given and widely wrong, I'll tell you why
- Techniques worth stealing — the kind that quietly improve every sentence you write for years
- Working notes from the desk — the journal section, where half-formed observations get a home before they're ready to be essays
Who's behind it
Hi — I'm Eleanor Marsh. I'm a novelist and workshop teacher based in Edinburgh, with two literary novels published and a third currently in revision. Before I started writing full time, I taught fiction craft at undergraduate level for six years. The Writer's Reverie is where I write down what I've learned — and, more often, what I'm still trying to work out.
I write every essay you read here. I re-read each book I quote from at least twice (usually more). The work is slower than turning out ten posts a week with a content-mill AI — but I think you can tell the difference within two paragraphs.
How this place works
The Writer's Reverie is reader-supported. We make money through a few honest channels:
- Affiliate links — when you buy a book, writing tool, or course through one of our links, we earn a small commission. I only link to things I genuinely recommend. See the full affiliate disclosure.
- Newsletter — free, one craft letter a week, no spam. Subscribe at the bottom of any page.
What we don't do: pop-up ads, autoplay videos, paywalls, or interrupt your reading with anything I wouldn't tolerate myself.
What's next
I'm building this slowly and on purpose. A new essay most weeks. The journal fills in between. One day there may be a proper craft book — but only when there's something worth printing on real paper.
If you want to follow along, the best way is the newsletter. If you want to say hi, push back on something I wrote, or send an essay request, the contact page is right there.
Thanks for reading. Now go write something good.
— Eleanor
